This explanation relies heavily on visual elements, and the vocabulary words that will be explored today are homophones which would become quite confusing in an auditory medium. However, do not fret, dear listeners, as new episodes will arrive.

観賞と鑑賞の違いは？｜What’s the Difference between 観賞 and 鑑賞?

Hello, there!

We’re Kiki and Koko! Your guides to Japanese language and culture from Kiki+Koko: Let’s NihonGO!! Online! And, we’re here to answer today’s question: What’s the Difference between 「観賞」 and 「鑑賞」?

Now, 「観賞」 can be used in different cases such as a point of view or an outlook, but this time, we’re focussing on the difference between 「観賞」 and 「鑑賞」 when it comes to the context of appreciation.

The difference is really only necessary in writing, as luckily, they’re both pronounced 「かんしょう」(kanshou). In order to understand the difference between 「観賞」 and 「鑑賞」, such as when we compared 「目標」 and 「目的」 in Helpful Hints Episode 07, taking a closer look at the 漢字, kanji, can uncover the nuance of Japanese words that may have the same translation in English.

First, in 「観賞」, there’s 「観」, an appearance/look, a sight/spectacle, or a view/outlook; and in「 鑑賞」, there’s 「鑑」, a model; an example; a paragon; an exemplar. 「観」, relies heavily on the 「見」 radical, for viewing or looking. Keep this in mind as we continue!

The way to understand the difference between 「観賞」 and 「鑑賞」 becomes clearer when you look at related vocabulary such as 「観賞植物」, kanshoushokubutsu— ornamental plants; or 「観賞魚」, kanshougyo, ornamental fish. You may see an irregular usage for 「観賞魚」 alternatively spelt as 「鑑賞魚」. But, again, it’s not the rule, rather an exception to it; so don’t let it confuse you if you ever encounter it.

Let’s now look to a couple of vocabulary words related to 「鑑賞」, such as 「鑑賞眼」, kanshougan, an eye for art or the ability to appreciate art; 「鑑賞会」, kanshoukai, a screening or viewing party, or most tellingly, 「芸術鑑賞」, geijutsukanshou, art appreciation.

So, after seeing this context, we can more easily break it down into one simple rule. 「鑑賞」 has the nuance of understanding and discerning the work, and「 観賞」 is appreciating the visuals, the beauty, such as in the prior examples in nature such as trees, plants, etc. It seems that in the simpler terms, if you’re appreciating a work of art, use 「鑑賞」, and if you’re appreciating or ‘viewing’ something that is perhaps in nature or even a living thing, use 「観賞」. But, just in case—because even that definition leaves something to the imagination—in the absolute simplest of terms, if a human made it, use「鑑賞」and if it’s tangibly visible in nature, it’s「観賞」.

With a today’s double vocabulary, we also have a double secret code!

「999」which is ポケベル語(pokeberugo) or pager language, for 「サンキュー」(sankyuu) which is slang for 「thank you」. This is not the only way to say, thank you, using numbers, however. In Japanese, 「９」can be pronounced 「きゅう」(kyuu), and there are three, or 「さん」(san) . So, さん(san)・きゅう(kyuu)…サンキュー(sankyuu)!

And, the still used slang for 「サンキュー」(sankyuu) is 「39」for the same reason「 3」 being「さん」(san) and 「9」read as 「きゅう」(kyuu).
